Over 45 crore devotees have already taken their ritualistic bath in the sacred waters of Triveni Sangam during the ongoing Maha Kumbh. With the Kumbh Mela continuing until February 26, many across the country are contemplating the feasibility of attending in the remaining fortnight.
The recent influx of pilgrims for Magh Purnima severely impacted travel to Prayagraj in recent days. Journey times by road, usually eight hours, have doubled or even tripled. Traffic congestion has caused delays of eight to ten hours, stranding travellers in their vehicles.
Those arriving in Prayagraj often faced a 10 to 20 km walk to reach their final destinations. Despite police warnings issued 200 km away in Madhya Pradesh, which advised against travelling to the Kumbh Mela due to overcrowding, pilgrims remained undeterred.
Amidst the large crowds at the Mahakumbh, Uttar Pradesh Police have issued a traffic update. The police stated all routes leading to the Kumbh Mela are currently running smoothly. In the last few hours, the traffic rate has remained stable, with no increase. Junctions within the city are also operating without any major issues.

- The route from Kashi to Prayagraj, previously congested, is now open and allows for easy travel between Varanasi and Prayagraj. Travellers can utilise the route via Hanumanganj, Andwa, and Jhunsi, which Google Maps currently indicates is free of traffic.
- The road from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh to Prayagraj has been cleared, allowing for a smoother pilgrimage experience. Visitors travelling from Jaunpur to Prayagraj can now reach Prayagraj, the sacred confluence of rivers, without encountering traffic congestion. The route proceeds through Damruwa, Machhli Shahar, Kuvarpur, Mugra Badshahpur, and Jhunsi, ensuring a hassle-free journey. The improved road conditions enable travellers to reach Prayagraj by car in approximately three hours.
- In addition, residents of Rewa can now rejoice since travelling to Prayagraj has become easier. The previously congested roads are now clear, allowing for a peaceful and swift journey. One can reach the Sangam city in a mere 2 hours and 48 minutes via Mangawa, Tikuri, Ghuma, and Kidganj.
- Travellers wishing to visit Kumbh Mela from Lucknow can take the Purvanchal Expressway and NH731 route. This route is recognised for its lack of congestion, allowing for a smooth and efficient journey. The approximate travel time is five hours, enabling pilgrims to partake in a dip of faith with relative ease.
- Roads are now open and the traffic is free-flowing in Prayagraj. Balsan Chauraha and Sahason Chauraha are notably clear, allowing people to navigate with ease. The absence of traffic jams contributes to smoother travel throughout the city.
The police are on high alert, with traffic police clearing all routes. Police personnel are stationed throughout the city, and devotees are urged to use designated parking areas and avoid parking on the roads.
All routes are monitored from a central control room using technology, and videography of every street and intersection is shared through a WhatsApp group for real-time situational awareness.
