Bangalore-Mysore expressway is the only road in India where the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) is completed

The number of accidental deaths on the 117-km Bangalore–Mysore expressway has dropped significantly post the implementation of the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) and since September there have been no such deaths, the Lok Sabha was informed on Thursday.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) can be implemented as ATMS or it can be part of broader (Vehicle to Everything) V2X communication.
“The objective is to reduce accidents, traffic violations and incident response time by implementation of ATMS. Government plans to implement the ATMS solution in Highways and Expressways in a phased manner,” he said.
Bangalore-Mysore expressway is the only road in India where ATMS is completed. Gadkari said in Bangalore-Mysore Expressway, the accident data before and after installation of ATMS was reviewed and it was found that there is decrease in fatality post implementation of ATMS in July, 2024.

In 2023, the road saw 188 accident deaths – highest registered in May (29) and June (27). In March and April 2023, 20 deaths each were reported.
This year, January saw 12 deaths. In March and June, nine deaths were reported each month. February and July saw six deaths each. Tthree people were killed in April and May each, the ministry data shows.
Alathur MP K Radhakrishnan had asked the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) about the data on ITS installed on national highways across the country.
Gadkari also said the technology is awarded for 58-km Dwarka Expressway in Delhi and Haryana; 180 km Delhi-Agra e-way in Uttar Pradesh; and 103 km Lucknow Ring Road also in Uttar Pradesh.
It is under the bidding phase for 75-km UER-II in Delhi and Haryana; 80-km Bangalore Ring Road in Karnataka and 825-km Chardham Connectivity in Uttarakhand.
Gadkari went on to say that in addition to above, the government has implemented and is implementing ATMS as part of highway projects like Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Trans-Haryana Expressway, Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, and Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway.
