Bengaluru and other cities have announced traffic curbs during Ganesh Chaturthi to ensure smooth idol immersions.

The Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations are in full swing, and with thousands of idols being immersed across the country, major cities are preparing for huge crowds and traffic challenges. Bengaluru, in particular, is bracing for a rush as more than 30,000 idols are expected to be immersed at Halasuru Lake Kalyani between August 27 and August 31.
To ensure safety and smooth traffic flow, the Bengaluru Traffic Police have issued a detailed plan that includes diversions, one-way changes, and no-parking zones. People have been urged to plan their journeys well in advance as restrictions will remain in force daily from 2 pm to 4 am.
Bengaluru traffic curbs will change regular routes near Halasuru Lake
Officials confirmed that several key stretches around Halasuru Lake will be converted into one-way roads during the immersion period. For example, on Kensington Road, the traffic movement will be allowed only from MEG towards Kensington-Murphy Road, while Annaswamy Modaliyar Road will also see changes to ensure a smoother approach to the lake.
Meanwhile, alternative routes have been suggested. Vehicles approaching from MEG via Kensington Road should take a diversion at Gurudwara Junction, passing through Gangadhara Chetty Road, Dickenson Road, St. John’s Road, and Promenade Road before rejoining near Halasuru Lake. Similarly, traffic from Thiruvallavar Statue Junction should follow Gangadhara Chetty Road and Dickenson Road towards the immersion site.

Parking bans will be enforced near the main entrance of Halasuru Lake Kalyani, as well as on Kensington Road, Annaswamy Modaliyar Road, and Tank Road. The police have made it clear that strict action will be taken against violators.
Thane will see extensive diversions around immersion points
In Thane, authorities are preparing for heavy crowds at immersion sites like Rayaladevi, Upvan Lake, Wagle Estate, and Payaladevi Temple. The traffic advisory will be in force on key days such as August 28, August 31, September 2, and September 6 (Anant Chaturdashi).
Some routes will be fully closed to regular traffic, such as the stretch between Maharashtra Bank and Jilaniwadi via Road No. 16; only vehicles carrying idols will be permitted here. Similarly, roads near Raghunath Nagar, Sankalp Chowk, and Modella Checkpoint will have entry restrictions with alternate routes provided.
Large parts of Thane, especially around Birsa Munda Chowk and Upvan Talav, will also have strict no-parking zones to prevent gridlock. The advisory is clear that only essential services and immersion vehicles will be exempt from these restrictions.
Mumbai will have separate arrangements for smooth idol immersions
Mumbai, which hosts some of the largest Ganesh celebrations in the country, will also see traffic diversions and no-parking zones around key immersion points like Girgaon Chowpatty, Dadar Chowpatty, and Juhu Beach.
However, since Mumbai has a separate detailed traffic plan, authorities have advised residents to keep an eye on local police updates for area-specific restrictions.
Lucknow has issued traffic changes for the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival
In Lucknow, traffic changes are being enforced from the very first day of Ganesh Chaturthi. Starting from 10 am, buses and private vehicles have been diverted onto alternate routes to avoid congestion near major celebration sites.
For example, buses coming from Ayodhya Marg and Gomti Nagar will now reach Kaiserbagh through routes like Kamta Tirahe, Gandhi Setu, and Chiraiya Jheel Tiraha instead of the usual stretches. Similarly, traffic coming from Sitapur Road and Daliganj has been redirected via Pakka Pul Crossing and Shaheed Smarak.
Several choke points in the city, including Clark Avadh Tiraha, Subhash Chauraha, and IT Square, will see strict restrictions with diversions in place to keep Ganesh processions moving smoothly.
Hyderabad traffic restrictions will only apply for a day
Unlike other cities, Hyderabad has announced traffic curbs only for August 27, the first day of Ganesh Chaturthi. Police have diverted traffic in areas where large gatherings and idol processions are expected, asking commuters to use alternate routes for the day.
Normal traffic movement will resume afterward.
Citizens urged to plan during festive days
With lakhs of people expected to participate in Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations across India, city traffic departments have stressed the need for patience and cooperation.
Bengaluru will have five days of extended restrictions, Thane will enforce them on multiple days, while Lucknow and Hyderabad will manage diversions according to local requirements.
Officials across cities have issued the same reminder: plan your trips early, follow diversions, and avoid parking in restricted areas to ensure a smooth and safe Ganesh festival for everyone.
