Union govt launches pilot for GNSS-based tolling on Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway, promising barrier-free travel & hassle-free payments.
The Union government has announced plans to initiate a pilot project for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) based toll collection on the 10-lane Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway.
This decision, revealed by Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari in response to Rajya Sabha member Lahar Singh Siroya’s query, aims to explore advanced technologies for toll collection on key roadways, including the Bengaluru-Mysuru NH-275 in Karnataka, as reported by The Hindu.
Minister Gadkari highlighted that a consultant has been appointed to offer guidance on implementing GNSS technology for barrier-less tolling. GNSS, he explained, enables precise vehicle positioning on highways, facilitating toll calculation based on the distance traveled.
This technology, under government consideration for over three years, promises seamless movement for vehicles without the need to halt for toll payments.
Detailing the process, Gadkari mentioned that vehicle registration plate photos would be captured to determine toll amounts according to the highway distance covered.
This system replaces the radio frequency identification-based Fastags introduced in 2016 and mandated from January 2021. As per the Minister, a remarkable 8.13 crore Fastags have been issued with a penetration rate of 98 percent achieved since their rollout.
