In September 2024, international money exchange MoneyGram was hit with a data breach affecting its more than 150 million users.

While this data breach is long-since fixed, this is a small reminder that MoneyGram is offering up to two years of identity protection and credit monitoring for you—so long as you actively sign up.

What Happened to MoneyGram?

In late September 2024, reports emerged that MoneyGram had suffered a significant data breach. Given MoneyGram has more than 150 million users around the world and a significant number in the US, this breach affected a significant number of people.

The attack between September 20 and 22, 2024, caused a five-day outage at the service. A confidential source told Bleeping Computer that the company was breached through a social engineering attack, and that there was no ransomware at play.

The data breached included names, email addresses, postal addresses, social security numbers, government IDs, and more.

MoneyGram contacted its affected users directly at the time of the breach, explaining what data may have been stolen. It also recommended that affected users place a credit freeze on any linked accounts, which is standard procedure when a financial breach of this nature takes place.

In addition, MoneyGram offered affected users up to two years of free credit tracking and analysis. The extra tracking will ensure that the financial or personal data isn’t used further down the line once the dust has settled on the initial breach.
